Do L-com industrial Ethernet cables work outdoors?
Yes for the outdoor-rated variants. L-com makes Cat 5e and Cat 6 patch cables in commercial-rated, industrial-rated (broader temperature range, oil and chemical resistance), and outdoor-rated (UV-resistant jacket, direct-burial gel-filled options). For outdoor PoE runs and harsh environments, the outdoor-rated cables are the right choice. Standard commercial Cat 5e cable degrades quickly under UV and weather exposure. Which NEMA enclosure rating do I need?
NEMA ratings indicate environmental sealing. NEMA 4 protects against splashing water and dust. NEMA 4X adds corrosion resistance (typical for coastal, marine, and chemical environments). NEMA 6 adds submersion resistance. For most outdoor wireless gear in non-coastal US deployments, NEMA 4 is sufficient. For Florida coastal and saltwater-adjacent installs, NEMA 4X is recommended. For underground or submerged installs, NEMA 6.
