Pure sine versus modified sine inverter: which do I need?
Pure sine wave inverters produce a clean sine wave AC output (closer to utility power) and are required for sensitive electronics: laptops, medical devices, oxygen concentrators, motors with variable frequency drives, sensitive radios, induction motors, anything with a transformer. Modified sine wave inverters produce a stepped approximation of sine wave and work for resistive loads (incandescent lights, heaters, basic tools, simple electronics) at lower cost. For RV and marine with mixed loads including sensitive electronics, pure sine. For pure-resistive loads only, modified sine is cheaper.
How do I size a Samlex inverter for my RV or boat?
Total the continuous AC load (sum the wattage of everything that will run simultaneously) and add 20-30 percent headroom for surge (motor starts, refrigerator cycling). Most RV deployments fit in the 1500W to 3000W pure sine range. Marine deployments vary widely from 600W small boat to 5000W large commercial vessel. Tell us the load list (microwave wattage, AC unit wattage, refrigerator, electronics) and we recommend the right inverter size.
Which Samlex MPPT solar charge controller fits my panel array?
Match the controller current rating to the maximum panel array short-circuit current with 25 percent safety margin. For a 400W panel array on 12V battery, that's about 33A panel current plus margin equals 40A controller. For 800W array on 24V, also about 40A. SCC-series 30A is typical for 300-400W arrays, SCC-series 40A for 500-800W arrays. Tell us the panel array wattage, battery voltage, and we recommend the right MPPT controller and any required series-parallel wiring of the panels.
